Budapest Hosts Languages & The Media 2024: Focus on Innovation and Accessibility

The 2024 programme, now live, will examine the increasing role of AI and automation in media localization, with particular attention on artificial intelligence in dubbing, and the critical role human expertise in automated workflows.

The conference will also explore how different audiences engage with subtitled and dubbed content, with particular attention to younger viewers on social media platforms. Innovative research techniques, such as eye-tracking, will offer new insights into how media is processed across cultural and age demographics. Sessions will also examine the emotional impact of both dubbing and subtitling on viewers. Case studies from various countries around the world will be discussed, focusing on the audience’s response to machine-translated content.

Cultural sensitivity will be a recurring theme, particularly in relation to audio description for visually impaired audiences, reflecting ongoing debates around accessibility in media production. A central focus will be the importance of creating “born-accessible” content, ensuring that inclusivity is prioritised from the outset.

“The rise of artificial intelligence in audiovisual translation raises important questions about the future of creativity and human expertise in the field. The discussions at this year’s conference will be critical in shaping how the industry moves forward,” said Prof. Jorge Diaz-Cintas, CenTraS, University College London & Senior Organising Committee Member.

Regulatory changes influencing the profession, particularly in access services, will also be a significant focus, especially in light of the rapid growth of online platforms. The programme will further investigate the growing phenomenon of fan-driven translation, with case studies illustrating how non-professional subtitlers are shaping media consumption, often in regions where censorship limits access to audiovisual content.

Languages & The Media 2024 will bring together participants from almost 50 countries, making it the most international edition to date. It is an essential event for those working at the intersection of media production, localization, technology, and accessibility.
